The Edith Nourse Rogers Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) Scholarship allows eligible veterans using Chapter 33 or dependents using the MGySgt Fry Scholarship to get added benefits. This scholarship provides up to 9 months of additional benefits for training in high-demand fields.
Eligibility
- Must be either a veteran using Chapter 33 or a dependent using the MGySgt Fry Scholarship
- Dependents using transferred Chapter 33 are not eligible.
And one of the following circumstances:
- You’re currently enrolled in an undergraduate STEM degree program or approved double major, completed at least 60 out of 120 required credit hours for your academic program(s), and have 6 months or less of your Chapter 33/Fry Scholarship benefits remaining
- You’ve earned a qualifying Bachelor's degree in a STEM field, been accepted or enrolled into a teaching certification program, and have 6 months or less of your Chapter 33/Fry Scholarship benefits remaining
What are the benefits of the STEM Scholarship?
The benefits of the STEM scholarship are all the same as your Chapter 33 or Fry Scholarship. You will receive tuition and fees paid directly to the school, a monthly housing allowance and book stipend paid directly to you. The STEM Scholarship is essentially a one-year extension to your current benefits.
VA Scholarship Prioritization
If you meet these eligibility requirements, the VA states that they can’t guarantee that you’ll receive the Rogers STEM scholarship.
The VA gives priority to:
- Students who have 100% benefit percentage based on time of service, and
- Students who require the most credit hours compared to other applicants (40 credit hours left to complete degree compared to 6 credit hours left)
Which fields of study are approved for the STEM Scholarship?
You can use this scholarship for undergraduate degree programs in these fields of study:
- Agriculture science or natural resources science
- Biological science
- Computer and information science and support services
- Health care or a health-care-related field
- Mathematics or statistics
- Physical science
You can view the full list of approved programs with the VA. Appalachian does not have certain STEM fields as academic programs, such as engineering or avionics. Please compare the list of approved STEM fields with the list of available programs at Appalachian.
How do I apply for and use the STEM Scholarship?

If you are awarded the STEM Scholarship, you will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) similar to your original benefit in the mail. As soon as you receive your STEM Scholarship COE, send a copy to studentveteranservices@appstate.edu to avoid a lapse in benefit coverage.
