Application Fee and Deposit Waiver (V)

Appalachian State University waives both Undergraduate and Graduate application fees for veterans as we recognize what it means to have this unique population of students on campus. Additionally, the deposit to hold your spot is also waived!

Transfer Credit

If you are bringing transfer credit from one or multiple universities, colleges, or high school, you can view how your credits may transfer using Appalachian's Transfer Equivalency Search, as well as work to get your credits applied with Transfer Services.

What is a Joint Services Transcript (JST)?

The Joint Services Transcript describes your military schooling, training and work history in civilian terms. Another important use for your JST is cataloging your experience with particular skills. For example, if you learned some fundamentals in mechanical engineering, or welding, or cybersecurity, or other specific disciplines, your JST will have a record of your experience and training.

What can I get from my JST at Appalachian?

Before applying for admission, prospective active-duty or veteran students can use the UNC Military Equivalency System to determine how experience from their Joint Services Transcript (JST) equates to specific courses at North Carolina's public universities, including Appalachian State. Most often, we see credits transfer from military service into area requirements such as Physical Education, Military Science and Leadership, and credits in health science designations for combat medics and corpsman. We often do not see areas such as engineering or avionics transfer over because Appalachian does not have aviation or engineering programs. These courses may not be counted as transfer credit to avoid them being placed in electives and restricting your education benefits by doing so. In order to receive any specific credit from their military service, veterans must submit their Joint Service Transcript during the application process or submit to Transfer Services for a re-evaluation.

Priority Academic Registration

With all VA benefits having a set amount of time to use those benefits, we recognize that getting into the classes you need must be a priority. Self-identified veterans, active-duty, and dependents using VA benefits are able to receive priority academic registration for this reason. You must have a label in the university system of military veteran, active-duty, or dependent to use this resource.

All students must schedule a meeting with their academic advisor before the registration period.

Priority Parking Permit Registration (V)

All student veterans at Appalachian State are allowed to register for a parking permit with seniors and graduate students on the first day of the parking permit registration period. This is to ensure that student veterans have the best chances at selecting a parking permit that works for their needs. However in order to receive priority parking permit registration, the student must be identified as a veteran in the university system.

For more information, contact Parking and Transportation Services at 828-262-2878 or parking@appstate.edu.

Graduation Honor Cord (V)

To honor the commitment and sacrifice of our veterans, Student Veteran Services gives each student veteran a red, white and blue honor cord to wear at their graduation commencement ceremony.

We also offer military branch stoles to borrow for graduation ceremonies if students do not have a personal one. Our stoles include Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and the Navy.
