At Appalachian State, we recognize and value our students not only for their service to our country, but also the leadership, life experience, and maturity they bring to the education environment on campus in and out of the classroom. Faculty, staff, and fellow students, whether military-connected or not, play an essential role in helping our veterans and military-connected students transition to life at Appalachian.
We invite you to host a Green Zone Training (GZT) to learn about the military student experience, common academic challenges for military-connected students, and how you can best to support this population. GZTs are available for student groups, staff, faculty, department chairs, and everyone in-between.
Mission: To build a network of informed and supportive faculty, staff, and administrators who are equipped to recognize the unique challenges faced by military-connected students and provide the guidance, resources, and advocacy needed to help them navigate their educational journey and thrive both academically and personally.
Objectives:
- Build situational awareness of military-connected students, particularly as it relates to the transition from military to university culture
- Become familiar with some of the constraints placed upon veterans by their use of VA benefits or VA healthcare
- Better understand the value that student veterans bring to the classroom
- Develop effective strategies for working and communicating with student veterans
Format:
- For student groups, GZT will be presented and facilitated by student employees.
- For professional staff and faculty departments, GZT will be facilitated by one full-time employee (FTE) and one student.
- For groups above departmental, or special events, GZT will be facilitated by one or more FTE.
Our GZT format is usually presentation with interactive reading, and opportunities for follow-up questions after the presentation. We can also curate handouts for GZTs.

Please fill out a Green Zone Training Request form at least two weeks in advance of your anticipated meeting or event. A member of our staff will follow-up on your request within 5-7 business days.
