John Diekmann, a U.S. Navy veteran and dedicated student at Appalachian State University, has made a lasting impact through his involvement in Team Sunergy and Student Veteran Services. Originally from Asheville, North Carolina, John served in avionics during his military career before transitioning to higher education, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in Sustainable Technology, graduating in May 2024.
John has been a key member of Team Sunergy, Appalachian State’s solar vehicle team, which designs, builds, and races solar-powered cars in national competitions. As an Electrical/Mechanical team member and vehicle driver, he played a vital role in the team’s second-place finish at the 2024 Electrek American Solar Challenge. His technical expertise in avionics translated seamlessly to troubleshooting and refining the solar car’s electrical and mechanical systems, ensuring top performance during races.
Beyond his contributions to sustainable technology, John was also a dedicated Student Veterans Association (SVA) member, serving as treasurer. His leadership within the SVA helped foster a strong, supportive community for military-affiliated students, ensuring they had the resources and advocacy needed to succeed academically and professionally.
John’s journey from Navy avionics technician to sustainability advocate showcases the impact student veterans have on campus innovation and leadership. His work with Team Sunergy and the SVA has not only strengthened Appalachian State’s veteran and sustainability programs but also inspired others to pursue careers in renewable energy and engineering.
As he moves into the next phase of his career, John remains committed to applying his technical skills, leadership, and passion for sustainability in meaningful ways. His story serves as a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of hands-on learning.
